Abstract:

The acousticbehaviouroffourAphodiusdungbeetlespeciesfromthePacificNorthwestoftheUSA wasinvestigated.MaleAphodiusproducesubstratevibrationswhentheymeetaconspecificfemalein a dung pat. The temporal structure of the substrate vibrations andthe stridulatory organs are described. The vibrations are species-specific songs that are emitted during courtship. The stridulatoryorganisoftheabdomino-larytypeintheinvestigatedspecies.Morphologicaldifferences withregardtothedetailedstructurearepresent.
