Abstract:

Dung-insectcommunitycompositionwasstudiedatthreesitesfor1year,andforafurther8 monthsatonesite, inanaridregionofSpain. Theinsectcommunitywasdominatedbyants, dungfliesandbeetles. Antswereabundantandfliesrelativelyscarceatall threesites, whereas beetle diversity and abundance differed among sites and between years. Community compositionvariedalongthe year inspecies richness, abundance andbiomass. Although dung-insectcommunitiesofaridSpainsharesometraitswithdung-insectassemblagesinother deserts, diversityandtrophicstructureof thesecommunitiesarehighlyvariable, acommon but underappreciatedfeatureofcommunitiesinaridregions.
